Balkan Snapshot: Korcula

There are people who are just your people. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. They are your people.

My buddy Erik just bought a place on the island of Korcula. Having not seen him in 15 years (except on Facebook), he invited us to stay with him (and his amazing wife Emira). That kind of invite doesn’t come every day, so we cancelled our place in Kotor, Montenegro and rented the two apartments literally up the stairs from them.

I knew it was going to be great to hang with Erik and Emira - they brought me up to speed on the politics and economics that I used to know so well, and we traded stories from back in the day. as well as highlights and anecdotes from the intervening years.

The kids ran along the beachfront, tested zombie-attack escape routes, and swam in the water 50 feet from their place, as well as befriending the local wild cats and dogs..

The unexpected joy was listening to Erik and Bill (Theresa’s dad) trade army stories and life wisdom.

Sure it would add a few hours to our trip to Tirana, Albania on Monday, but, centering people and relationships is what this is all about, right?

Good decision.
