Government Elephant
Chained to be fed and at night, unless she’s on patrol.
On walking past a Nepalese army base with elephants chained in an enclosure:
Me: Why would you use an elephant to patrol the jungle?
Sandeep, our guide: Because there are parts of the jungle where a jeep can’t go but poachers could. Plus if you patrol on foot you might get eaten by a tiger.
Me: oh.
We took a canoe to get to this bridge. Seriously.
Instructions: “if we see a rhino mother (which we had seen two that morning) or a tiger, back away slowly. If it charges, find a large tree and get behind it.”
